From Caterpillar to Butterfly: The Fear Tax

1 min read

A caterpillar once asks a butterfly,

How did you become this version of you?

The butterfly answered simply:

I stopped being afraid to fail.

That’s it? Yes.

That’s the whole leadership curriculum.

Most people stay caterpillars not because they lack potential, but because metamorphosis requires a season that looks a lot like falling apart.

The cocoon stage is messy and uncertain, offering zero guarantees.

So people opt out. They stay comfortable, competent, and crawling - when they were actually built to fly.

Here’s the behavioral spotlight:

Fear of failure isn’t a personality trait; it’s a habit of avoidance.

And like any habit, it’s reinforced every time we choose safety over growth, the safe project, the safe version of ourselves.

People who grow and discover their God-given capacity aren’t the ones who never fail.

They’re the ones who’ve made failure cheap.

They run small experiments, get feedback fast, treat setbacks as data, and repeat the cycle.

So the real question isn’t:

How do I avoid failing?

It’s:

What version of me is waiting on the other side of the risk I keep avoiding?
