The Cost of Becoming Who Everyone Expects

A mentor once asked me a question I’ll never forget.
“When was the last time you made a decision because it was truly yours?”
I paused.
Not because I didn’t have an answer…
But because my mind bounced from one occasion to another. I thought about the promotions I accepted because they looked impressive.
The opportunities I said yes to because people expected me to.
The times I stayed quiet because speaking up might disappoint someone.
The times I overcompensated to my own detriment to avoid awkward situations.
From the outside, it looked like success.
On the inside, it felt strangely unfamiliar.
Somewhere along the way, I had become incredibly good at meeting expectations, but not always my own.
Every “yes” to a life that isn’t aligned quietly becomes a “no” to the person you’re meant to become.
Many people don’t burn out because they’re working too hard.
They burn out because they’re carrying a version of themselves that was built to satisfy everyone else.
The most courageous self-leadership decision you’ll ever make may not be taking on more responsibility.
It may be giving yourself permission to lead, work, and live in a way that is authentically yours.
We don’t lose ourselves in one big decision.
We lose ourselves in a thousand small ones, each one reasonable, each one aimed at meeting an expectation instead of an intention.
And the leaders people actually trust aren’t the ones who never doubted themselves.
They’re the ones who stopped outsourcing their identity to other people’s approval.
So if you’re climbing, building, growing, ask yourself the same question:
“When was the last time you i made a decision because it was truly mine ?”
