Stop Chasing Goals. Build Systems.

Unpopular opinion: most goals fail not because people lack ambition, but because they never build a system to support them.

I just finished re-reading Atomic Habits, and one line stuck with me:

“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.”

Coming into this year, my fitness goal was simple: Walk daily. I failed at it for months.

“Walk more” was the whole plan, no time, no place, no trigger. It just competed with everything else in my day and lost every time.

So, 3 months ago, I did something different.

I stopped paying lip service to the goal and built a system instead.

Shoes by the door.

My workout clothes on a hanger nearby.

A standing time to meet a neighbor a few houses down, right after my quiet time.

No Fitbit — just the health app already on my phone, tracking my steps.

And to avoid overwhelm, I kept the target modest: two miles, every morning.

Nothing about my motivation changed.

My environment did.

I’ve been consistent ever since, not because I got more disciplined, but because the system made the behavior almost automatic.

What I See With Leaders

As a coach, I see this constantly.

Sharp, driven clients who know exactly what they want, the business contract, the promotion, the revenue target, the stronger team.

What most of them lack isn’t drive.

It’s a system that makes the right behavior happen even on their worst day.

Three Shifts That Make Systems Stick

1. Make it obvious.

Vague intentions die fast.

Get specific: what, when, where.

2. Make it easy.

Reduce friction on the habit you want.

Add friction to the one you don’t.

3. Make it visible.

Track it.

A visible streak of small wins fuels itself long before results show up.

Leaders and aspiring leaders: the next time you set a goal, ask one better question:

What system will make this happen on the days I don’t feel like it?”

That question builds more consistency than motivation ever will.
